Hi! We would like to introduce ourselves
to you. We are the Smith family of Smith-Haven Farm Alpacas. Our interest
in alpacas began several years ago while deciding what to do with our
new farm. You see, we bought a cornfield and had a dream. Originally
we thought horses - we had three - only to be discouraged in the fact
that pleasure horses do not qualify as a farm. Then it was on to crops.
What better than hay, Timothy to be exact. Well, we tilled and tilled
and planted AND planted. Lots of work --- and no rain (remember the
drought?). That
was
a very discouraging harvest. We got nothing but weeds. So in the fall
of 1999 we reseeded our entire property as pasture and to our surprise,
spring brought lush grasses. The perfect place for some of those cute
little animals no one knows about, "Alpacas". We did some
research and decided alpacas would be the livestock of choice for our
small farm. We started with 2 bred females, 2 male weanlings, 1 young
male and 1 gelding. That was a couple of years ago. Now we have 72 and
counting; and I can tell you it's getting very busy around here. We
have learned ALOT and have ALOT more to learn and we have met some of
the most WONDERFUL people along the way. "Alpaca People" are
truly wonderful. Stop by anytime you're in the area. I'm sure you will
fall in love with these animals as much as we have; we can't imagine
life without them.
